A week off work and nothing to do. A freezing cold winters day was probably not the best time to visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, but after wanting to go for ages, today was the day. I arose early in the morning to walk the 7 mile journey. Why walk? I hear you ask. Simple answer, it's good for you. Anyway, I used this opportunity to try out my new camera (Canon 600D).
There are information boards on all the enclosures that tell you all sorts of stuff, even the animals names. There's no set route around the park, you can wonder around as you please. The next area of the park I visited was the 'Lemur Woods'. This is an area where you can walk in and the lemurs are free to wonder around. They could be swinging in the trees or just sat on the grass, cleaning themselves. Next, I passed a collection of birds, various owls and even a skunk. Moving on, theres a few endangered painted hunting dogs. Then onto 'Wallaby Walkabout', where you can walk amongst the animals. They may appear cute, but up close, they are quite deceiving. After a short walk from the zebras, deer and camels, you arrive a the home of the leopard. It has a huge space with an enormous wooden climbing frame. Despite all this space, the leopard kept pacing up and down the same path alongside the edge of the enclosure. There is a viewing area that is level with the top of the climbing frame and you cant help but feel that the leopard could easily climb up there, should it wish too. If you walk to the other side of the viewing platform there is an area for a giraffe. However, it being the middle of winter, the giraffe was inside it's pen, in a warm shed. A bit further on from the leopard is another big cat. The tiger is quite a large animal, well, larger than I expected anyway, with it staring at you from just 2 meters away, you know that it's something you wouldn't want to mess with. Walk away from the tigers and you find Bambi and a couple of friends.
By this point, my hands were about to fall off. It was freezing. We had seen all the animals and it was time to pack away the DSLR. Easier said than done when your hands aren't working properly. A quick look around the gift shop then ready for the long walk home. Yeah, right. I got the bus. That's enough walking for one day.
